Every writer at some point has to try a haiku. A haiku is a poem consisting of three lines, arranged in lines of 5,7, and 5 syllables. Regular haikus have an element of nature and usually refer to a season. We wrote some, but with a few twists. Besides the regular haikus, we tried haikus for body parts, haikus for kitchen utensils, and some freestyle.

These are a traditional Haiku.

Bob Nothnagel. One for each season.

The buds are open
I wander in the forest
It begins to snow

I sit in my chair
The sun is shining brightly
I will get a tan

The leaves turn color
The garden is put to bed
I will now retire

Winds blast my window
I place a log in the fire
But I am still cold

Haikus for body parts

Bob Nothnagel

You have drunk too much
I must now filter all night
Be careful next time

Sight, Smell, Hear, Taste, Feel
Which of the ones will I be
None, I am the sixth

I am a hinge joint
I bend when you exercise
That is not a joke

Take it or leave it
Hot times and it must be gone
Size of a finger

I am small but big
Never sleeping on the job
Protected by bone

Please do not break me
Thumping, pumping, never stop
I circulate blood

Haikus for kitchen utensils:

Bob Nothnagel

I can flip your eggs
Do not let the grease splatter
Mine over easy

Pour in the powder
Make fast movements back and forth
Ooh, it smells so good

Dip it in your soup
Or maybe in some ice cream
Either way is good

There is a debate
Should I have three or have four
It doesn’t matter

I have a secret
You’ll never guess who I am
Don’t let life slip by

The right way I’m fine
But get it wrong and you’ll see
Something in your lap

Sarah

long forgotten egg
will it ever be scrubbed clean
sad green spatula

Reverse Haikus?

Bob Nothnagel

Death is good for me
So hear that I need not know
Life can be so good

A storm is brewing
For when is it we can see
The calm of the sea

Crave some attention
So tell me that I need to
Hold back my spirit

A flower blooms now
Can it survive tomorrow
A winter comes now

Haiku Puzzle

Take the different haikus and place them in order. When placed in the correct order you will have a Reverse Poem.

So we too must learn
That these are the facts of life
Winter for ever!

It is known by us
That we will grow no more plants
Never shall it be

Winter brings us spring
We dance amongst the gardens
It snows, we lament

What gets us to pause
To implant in us some doubt
Spring will come again
